This indicator shows the number of incident cases of Meningococcal Disease.

Why is this important?

Meningococcal disease refers to any illness caused by bacteria called Neisseria meningitidis, also known as meningococcus. They include infections of the lining of the brain and spinal cord (meningitis) and bloodstream infections (bacteremia or septicemia). These diseases are often severe and can be deadly. Meningococcal disease is treated with intravenous antibiotics and the best protection against them is staying up to date with recommended immunizations.
